Which road map should I buy? - If you need a road map of the Shasta Lake area you
can buy the "Redding & Red Bluff, California" map at most convenience
stores and gas stations. This map may also be called the "Shasta - Tehama Counties" map depending on the publisher. These maps show the major features and roads around Shasta Lake and the Redding, California area.

Need an Address?
If you need an address to use with an online map, here's a street address for the
McDonald's Restaurant in the City of Shasta Lake.
This McDonald's is located in the City of Shasta Lake. It's just west of the i-5 freeway and is on the way
to Shasta Dam. Take exit #685 from the i-5 freeway. The restaurant is located at the intersection of
Cascade Boulevard and Shasta Dam Boulevard (Also known as State Highway 151).
There are two gas stations/food marts in this area and a new Rite-Aid store, too.

NOTE: Some online maps of the City of Shasta Lake still show "Project City", "Central Valley", "Summit City" and "Pine Grove". These areas were combined when the City of Shasta Lake was formed (incorporated) on July 2, 1993. Some maps still don't list the correct name of the city, "Shasta Lake".
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Many of the tourist destinations are located about 20 miles north of the City of Shasta Lake in the town of Lakehead. Here's an address for a gas station in the town of Lakehead. This Shell station is located just east of the i-5 freeway (exit #702).

MAPPY GOODNESS THROUGH-AND-THROUGH
The Shasta Lake Business Owners Association puts out a great Shasta Lake map that shows the names of the coves and other fine details not found on many other maps. This map is pictured at top left.
This
map isn't available online at this time, but can be picked up FREE at most marinas and the Shasta Lake Visitor Information Center (U.S. Forest Service). The Shasta Lake Visitor
Information Center is located in the small town of Mountain Gate about 10 miles north of Redding just off the i-5 freeway.
If you're coming down to Shasta Lake from the
north, on i-5, you may not want to drive all the way to this information center. Just pick up a map at a marina or resort in the town of Lakehead.
If you're coming up to
Shasta Lake from the south I would highly recommend that you stop in at the info center in Mountain Gate and check out all the free brochures, maps and handouts. Even if the visitor
center is closed for the night you can still get a map out of their outdoor map rack. Here's a page with more info on how to get there. Shasta Lake Visitor Information Center
The Shasta Lake Visitor Information Center also has two other Shasta Lake maps. One is called the "Shasta Lake Boating Safety" map, and the other is called the "Shasta
Unit" map. Both are put out by the U.S. Forest Service and both are FREE.
You can also pick up the FREE boating safety map at the Valero gas station in the City of Shasta Lake. They usually have a stack of these maps at the counter near the door.
The Valero station is located right off i-5 with easy on/off freeway access. The people there are nice, too. Take the Shasta Dam Blvd. / Highway 151 exit #685.
While you're off the freeway you may want to drive 6 miles west on Highway 151 (Shasta Dam Boulevard) to visit Shasta Dam. You can check out the vista point overlooking Shasta Dam,
Shasta Lake and Mount Shasta. Bring a camera or camcorder so you can get a shot of yourself in front of the "3 Shastas" as they say. After you're done enjoying the view at the
Shasta Dam vista point, you can head down the hill to Shasta Dam. There's a great visitor center and some real nice picnic areas. There's even a FREE guided Shasta Dam tour.
There's a Chappie-Shasta Area Off-Highway Vehicle Guide/Map available up at the Shasta Lake
Information Center in Mountain Gate. This map covers the OHV area located west of Shasta Dam. The map has lots of info on the back including trail riding tips, safety tips, camping
information, regulations and emergency contacts. NOTE: To reach the Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area you will need to cross Shasta Dam. Due to security concerns a
permit from Shasta Dam officials (USBR) is required. The permit takes three to five days to process, so submit your application ahead of time. Here's the page with all the info and
an online version of the map... Chappie-Shasta OHV Area
Pictured at the bottom is a map put out by
the Shasta Lake Chamber of Commerce. This map focuses primarily on the streets in the City of Shasta Lake but also includes a smaller map of the actual lake. This map has "$2.95"
printed on it, but they were giving it away free at the gas station where I picked mine up.

Which "arm" of the lake is which?
Shasta Lake has four major "arms".....
- Sacramento River Arm
- McCloud River Arm
- Squaw Creek Arm
- Pit River Arm
Some maps don't identify the four arms of the lake. Below are links to maps that identify each arm of the lake.

See the size of Shasta Lake at different levels of drawdown
When Shasta Lake is full, the elevation of the water surface is 1067 feet above sea level. This is the elevation of the dam crest.
To find out the "drawdown" of the lake you subtract the current water surface elevation (lake level) from 1067'. This will tell you how far the lake
is from the top. If you don't feel like messing around with your Cray computer you can just click here for the latest lake level and drawdown data.

To get an idea of what the lake will look like at the various levels of drawdown, check out the maps below.
Use the color coded chart on the map to interpret the different shades of blue. The dark blue area of the map represents the lake at its lowest point in history. This was in September of 1977 when Shasta Lake was down 238 feet from the top.
